American Pool or English Pool?
While both are known as pool, there are various differences between an American pool table and an English one. The first and most noticeable difference is the size of the table. The usual pool table in Singapore pool centres are American tables measuring 9FT while those more commonly seen in bars would be English tables at 7FT.
The balls of the different tables are adjusted to compensate for the difference in the size of the table. American pool balls are standard and larger at 2¼” compared to their English counterparts that are 2″ with the white ball a fraction smaller at 1⅞. The pockets of the table are cut in relation to the size of the ball to make both games equally challenging.
Finally, the two tables uses different types of cloth on the playing surface. American pool tables uses a smoother, faster playing cloth than an English one. An English styled cloth has a noticeable furry feeling also known as a nap. This generates more friction and play is naturally slower.
With continuous use, the nap eventually flattens out and will result in a slightly faster surface. This sums up the subtle and not-so-subtle differences between American and English pool tables.
